Rammed Earth House Swakopmund
This modern villa for Jean Theron a business man from
Swakopmund was planned to be built on the same site
as Fort Haasbroek and although the scheme developed
to the stage of detailed construction drawings the project
was not completed. The site is characterised by typical
desert weather with ocasional dust storms and endless
views in all directions.
In this project I developed a modular plywood and expanded
polystyrene roof consisting of uncut 1220x2440 plywood panels
fitting inside a steel structure. This kept wastage to a minimum.
The transparent light strips were made from multi wall
polycarbonate panels with a very high R-vallue. All parts were
to be pre-manufactured and only assembled on site. After
this step infill rammed earth walls would follow.
