Damaraland Clay Project
2005-2006
These buildings were built in the Ugab River Damaraland Namibia in the Sorris Sorris conservancy with sun-dried bricks made on site and from material collected in the nearby area. The builders and designers were untrained and the technique of free vaulting without formwork had to be discovered by a process of trail and error. The only available information was from books and looking at some experimental examples in Hentiesbay and in Otjiwarongo during 1994. Labour was sourced from local conservancies. At the peak of the project 30 Damaras and 30 Hereros was employed and trained. Water was pumped from a nearby well in the base camp from EHRA a volunteering organisation campaigning for the cause of the desert elephants. The purpose of the project was to create a collaboration between the local people of the conservancy and the investors. Unfortunately the project was never completed due to unresolved conservancy politics, a bad spell of rainstorms at a very sensitive time and not enough funds.
