Buffeldrift - Sheep Herders Cottage
On a nearby hill, to the side of the main house at Buffelsdrift Farm, stands a small, whitewashed, roughly built stone sheep herder’s cottage. It is a simple two-room building with one entrance, two windows, and a large open-hearth fireplace. The exact age of this building is unknown, but it is most likely older than the main house, which dates back to 1852.
A modern intervention will transform the building into a micro home with one bedroom, a living room, a kitchenette, and a bathroom that is partly indoors, complemented by an outdoor shower with views of Towerkop. The addition features a shaped concrete roof with a large sun chimney facing northwest. The chimney leans toward 3:00 PM, with its inner angle aligned to the winter sun and the outer angle to the summer sun. It includes an ellipsoid glass roof window with a steel pivoting mechanism, allowing the inhabitants to look at the sky without any visual obstruction.
